A DIY micro-poem musical about a second-gen Burundian queer who, through constant questioning of their belonging, decides to choose their own pleasure in everything until it catches up to them. Then, they learn to balance it with the rhythm of their heart, and some drumming too… will this make it all worth it?
Umugisha was such a moving piece of poetry, song, dance and percussion with a magical bit of audience support to support our protagonist on their journey. We greatly enjoyed this piece and look forward to seeing it again on closing night! Definitely go and see it especially if you are a fellow immigrant still processing what it means to make a new home away from where you grew up.
Umugisha was a powerful performance supported by engaging audience participation, vocals, dance and drumming that draw you into the story! This is the type of performance that makes attending the Fringe festival an incredible time.
A strong, enthralling piece of theatre that is honest, authentic and multidisciplinary. My eyes were glued to the action on stage throughout the entire performance. Potent yet playful text paired with an incredible connection to the breath and body. I could see the care, consideration and love within this piece. It was a privilege to be welcomed into the space to experience it.
What a performance! The theme of time was ever present through the storytelling, at times cyclical and disorienting, guiding us to a carthatic conclusion. Come for an immersive poetry in motion and witness a profound awakening and transformation.
Umugisha is a deeply moving exploration of diaspora identity, capturing the complexity of hyphenated and intersectional existences with remarkable tenderness. The yearning woven through the vocals feels both personal and collective, while the intentional homages to ancestry ground the performance in a profound sense of lineage and belonging. The audience engagement is palpable throughout, and the movement between emotional, cultural, and spiritual portals is seamless and incredibly affirming. A beautiful reminder that our fragmented histories and layered identities can coexist in ways that are both poignant and empowering.
Canda is a force! This show explores self love, finding oneself, and being vulnerable through poetic moments and images.
Umugisha is a fantastic solo production sharing a vulnerable story through music, dance, and revelation. The artist did a great job inviting the audience inside their world while modeling self-care
This performance was an amazing and beautiful story that moved the audience with music, poetry and dance through the intimate subject matter. The audience participation involved created a very immersive feeling.
