WORKING TITLE is a devised performance piece that combines visceral movement with live-cued soundscapes to explore how the ceaseless noise of industry dictates the pace of our inner worlds. The two performers oscillate between characters while equipment grinds and screeches, their embodied humanity confronting the absurdity of an inorganic, faceless antagonist.

  1. Underrated show!!! Came in expecting a construction site – but it was so much more.
My only critique is that I noticed occasional “cuts” in the sound design – I believe they are intentional but I couldn’t figure out the intent as the moments felt random most of the time.

Very smartly put together – the choreography, the delivery of the text (very clever word and sound play!), the lighting; it all flows seamlessly. The two of them are fully engaged in their performance and there is no wasted movement. This depiction of labour (emotional, creative, physical) is so fresh. Laura and Ruby have expertly devised a work that balances meta-theatre and down to earth performance. It truly struck home as I have just had a relationship affected by a project. Best wishes with the continued development of your work as Turret Theatre.

  2. I really enjoyed this show! You can feel the audio radiate through your body and it felt like you are on a real construction site. It was funny, intense and informative; now I know how asphalt is laid down.

  3. This is such a smart piece of work about… work (and our relationships to it and to each other). A fascinating mix of chaos and structure. The soundscape is evocative and very present but less oppressive than I had feared, so if that’s been holding you back from seeing this, please give it a chance. It’s the sort of challenging, deeply creative theatre that you want to see at Fringe.

  4. best of fest in my heart!!! this show is SO good i’m so glad people are doing weird experimental stuff. the lights and sound were amazing, both performers were incredible, the spoken words are flowy and dreamlike. absolutely nails what medication side effects feel like lmao. i really hope this crew does more in ottawa i’d love to follow their work

  5. A lot of people hate devised theatre or work adjacent to it. I was certainly one of them, but I think I’ve been converted. One of my favourite shows this year; didn’t expect so many surprises both comical and chilling. I was fully complicit in the world they created even as it changed with every asphalt step. I’m excited to see what they make next.

  6. I loved this show. It was like a real life performance the likes of Einstürzende Neubauten or Test Dept., but Canadian!! The last time I saw something this groundbreaking (not to the asphalt process) was Arthur Lipsett’s “Very Nice Very Nice” on the NFB.

The two performers are incredibly skilled. I would watch this twice just to focus on each one in turn. Heck, I would love to find out how they got to THIS being the final version.
