When Stephen’s family moves to a small, conservative town, his search for belonging pulls him closer to truths he’d rather avoid.

Content Notes

Nudity because I’m stripping off clothes during the show, until it’s just me and my Bible. I can’t remember if there’s much swearing in my show, but better safe than sorry. :)

“People keep asking me if I’m Mennonite. They have no idea how complicated that question really is.” Part gay burlesque, part history lesson, The Naked Mennonite strips away all façade until only the bare truth is left behind.

  1. A heartwarming and hilarious view into identity, religion, and burlesque. Maybe it’s because I’m also a gay ex-Mennonite but I can’t recommend this show enough. The emotions hit hard and the laughs were with tears (not to mention the burlesque!) An absolute must-see

  2. I have seen five shows so far at Fringe and this one is at the top of my list for must-sees! Stephen’s story is told in a deeply engaging and moving manner… Even the subject matter that may seem dry at first (history of the Mennonites), Stephen tells in an easy-to-remember and compelling way that had me laughing just as much as I was learning. Stephen intermixes burlesque with his story telling and it really adds to the feeling of compassion the audience has for the character as he becomes more and more vulnerable. I really felt connected to the character and to the story despite having never lived in a high-control environment or experienced a religious upbringing. Very well performed and very well written.

  3. Certainly one of my favorites of the Fringe this year; I had heard good things and was not disappointed! As a fellow ex-Christian, this hit close to home for me, but would be truly a delight for anybody to watch. The mixture of storytelling and burlesque was masterfully executed.

  4. All at once funny and personal and oddly informational? A heartfelt piece and a great story to listen through.

  5. Funny and insightful! Hot and thoughtful (hotful?)

A touching and heartfelt biography with a sexy twist. Definite must-see!

  6. This is one of the best fringe shows I’ve seen. Stephen exudes a level of honesty and humanity that is hard to come by these days. I laughed, I learned, and I loved it.

  7. I had a great time watching the show. It was very funny and had great story telling. As someone who was sent to a religious school, this show hit close to home. I’d highly recommend it.
