Roominant is an ensemble devised production featuring a mix of physical theatre and puppetery. The Piece explores themes of self reflection, growth and embracing ones self, inspired by the experiences of the director as a neurodivergent individual. The piece utilised the experiences and reflections of cast and crew members to create a broad approach to the experience of rejection. Roominant doesn’t strive to educate, instead it asks you to find something to relate to and to take with you when you leave the theatre. As a theatre group we approach the topics within the piece with an understanding that everyone is different and each indivual person has their own experience of the ups and downs of life; this is Miko’s. Combining physical theatre and puppetry allows the story to take on a calmer and more emotive form. Instead of telling the audience and using an exuberance of words, Roominant presents its story sans dialogue. Partly, this artistic choice is inspired by the directors experiences with going mute for some time and in part we simply found it a simpler and in some ways more honest portrayal of what we wanted to say. Roominant also explores the concept of safe spaces and what such a space might look like in yourself. Perhaps you will find a room within yourself too.

  1. I liked the pace, how they took time to sit in moments, to explore, to deploy the story. I enjoyed the universe and the ambiance they’ve installed through set design and sounds. The depiction of anxiety is genuine. And great puppeteering I enjoyed watching.

  2. This is probably the most unique show I’ve seen at the Fringe so far this year. Other than a recorded voicemail, the story is told without words through movement, some dance, lighting, interacting with set pieces, and a life-sized puppet! As someone with anxiety, I related to the feelings I saw on stage. The story unfolds slowly, really sitting in quiet moments. Soundtrack, set design and lighting were interesting, and the movements of the puppet were fun! All together, this made for some cool stage pictures. I am curious to see this production continue to evolve, as it would be great to see more of the main character, Miko, before the events of this show, to see and feel more of a shift and the weight of the rejection. Thank you for sharing this piece and I’m glad I saw this show :)
