Life isn’t easy for the emo girl in a suburban town’s high school. That is until Devon — a senior who’s never quite fit in with the popular crowd — gets invited to her first high school party! Man this is just like the movies! But she’s seen this cliché before, and despite her dreams of having the ultimate high school experience, she can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t quite right.
Subverts expectations in the best way! It’s camp.
Incredible writing, acting, coordination, and very smart use of resources. Sharp and fully leans into the kitsch of 2014 high school. I have never seen Re:Zero, but it’s like the opposite of Re:Zero.
The characters have their arcs without abandoning their true essence. Truly embodies how we should move forward in our lives.
And a shout of appreciation for all the background art – I know that must have taken a while.
I’ve been thinking about this show a lot since I saw it on Sunday. I’ll start with my first and least complicated reaction — it’s funny! There are lots and lots of jokes that had me and the rest of the audience laughing out loud. Also, the creators have a confidence and competence that is impressive. You can tell that these young performers have spent time on stage and know how to embody a character and create a world. Now I’ll try to touch on the difficult part of why this play is sticking with me—it’s smart and thoughtful in a surprising way. It gives the initial sense that it’s about tropes, fun plot tricks and quick jokes and consistently complicates that assumption. This play has affection and respect for its characters. Their emotional world isn’t simple and they are not used as shallow devices. Also, the plot is genuinely clever and this group offers a unique take on the time loop genre. This play reminded me that—thank goodness—new artists will always be coming forward with new perspectives and new stories and we are all just lucky to be in the audience.
Ok, I just left a review and forgot to mention the staging so now I need to leave a second review, like a weirdo :). The projected backdrops do so much work for this show. Having directed a handful of fringe shows a million years ago, I know how hard it is to create any sense of place or mood or anything when you’re doing a show in a small black box with a minuscule budget. The backdrops add a sense of place, help the audience know what’s going on and—most importantly—they add real charm and warmth. Also, they wrote a song and produced it?! Who does that?! Very cool.
Had a good time. I would recommend this show
Fantastic performance! Talented performers and hilarious script. 10 / 10 !
Endlessly funny, seamlessly produced and exceptionally written. Whoever wrote this play is a creative powerhouse ;)
This show was so fun to watch! An enjoyable blend of originality and classic tropes. Very polished performances as well!
Awesome time-looping antics and beautiful use of a projector! Particularly enjoyed the montage of Devin’s relentless.. misfortunes. Ending was hilarious, and strong acting throughout from all involved – well done and thank you!
