An autobiographical, solo show about a secular Jew/music nerd’s search for selfhood at French Catholic school, Jewish camp, family holidays and beyond.
Interwoven with violin playing, this poignant and funny story will captivate and delight.
I will ask the audience to yell “Mazel Tov” at the end of the show. This is optional, but will enhance the experience.
A transcript and extended content note are available for this show. This show will have a masked performance on June 16 at 4:30pm.
“Laura tells her story with honesty, humour, generosity, compassion, and courage, not to mention excellent storytelling skills and masterful musicianship.”
Wonderful heartfelt presentation with lots of pathos and honesty. Bravo!
Enjoyed this very much. Authentic in the best sense: I could relate to what Laura was saying, and the musical parts fit well with her ideas. She made the stories and feelings both fun and accessible. The show flew by so quickly.
This show tells the funny and poignant tale of someone who grew up between two worlds: not fully at home in her culture of origin and not fully accepted in the dominant culture. Laura convincingly recreates her grade-school self, her university self, and everything in between, punctuating it all with humour and well-chosen interludes expertly played on the violin. By the end of this show you will better understand everyone you know who found themselves “between two worlds”, be it yourself, or a former classmate, or an old friend.
You don’t need to be Jewish or a musician to get Jewish-ish.
Laura animates her story of her transition from a safe happy loving childhood home into
a world where fitting in means questioning her language, faith and core identity.
Themes of humiliation, anger, rejection and redemption are explored throughout the show. Laugh-out-loud stories and moments of reflection are interweaved with Laura’s exquisite violin excerpts that contrast poignant jewish melodies with well known classical gems.
Through her violin, singing voice, and acting, Laura masterfully takes us on a journey through both joyous and painful experiences as she develops self-awareness in a world that wants us to conform, showing us a path forward
through questioning and discovery.
