Fantasy, reality, and impossibility intertwine as Cressida tries to break a curse on her family.

Content Notes

  • Mature Language – there is one case of “shit”
  • Violence – a character is stabbed and dies, it is theatrical and non graphic but with blood visible on the sword. Another character is held at knife point.
  • Mental Health – the play is in part an exploration of the concept of Narrative Therapy, and how people end up trapped in narratives that don’t meet their needs. There are various examples of characters dealing with mental health in general, though no specific diagnosed conditions.

Six souls wrestle with the narratives they’ve built for themselves from hopes, fears, and desires. A Rabbit is rather too anxious about the time, considering it’s Fringe. Golden Threads holds a kaleidoscope up to fairy tale archetypes and takes you on a surreal and gothic journey for redemption.

Profits from the show will be donated to the Ottawa Trans Library, who work to preserve and share diverse stories as well as provide safer spaces for community building. Find out more about their mission at: https://ottawatranslibrary.ca

  1. when I went to the show golden threads, I found it very amazing! It has a very pretty set design and costumes! theres alot happening, but as le show grows on, it begins to make alot more sense! (thats a good thing) it is extremely beautiful Performance, and I definitely recommend seeing it!

  2. An absolutely beautiful fairytale. The costumes are stunning. The performance captivating. The actor who plays the rabbit an absolute standout. The play weaves several different narrative threads into a beautiful golden cloth by the end. If you love tragically beautiful fairytales, you must not miss this show!

  3. Praise to the actors, however, the writing was incredibly difficult to follow. The story was rather confusing, and didn’t seem to tie up in the end. It was also advertised (communicated through the preview) that this show was queer— that was not the case. What was supposed to be the « love » story came across unwelcome. It felt performative and « queer » for the clout.

  4. Saw this show last night at the Ottawa Fringe festival. It was well written and well acted. I really enjoyed it! Set design was amazing! Loved how the story made a full circle and ended up back where it started. This one is recommended.

  5. Lockpick always has gorgeous sets and costumes, and this year is no different. This play felt like a big swing, with a large, well-acted cast and a many-layered story that explored a lot of deeper themes in just an hour.

  6. This was a very interesting play. I had a few good laughs. The actors did a fantastic job. The costumes and set design were amazing. I’m glad I went to see it – well done!

  7. The actors were all wonderful, the costuming was beautiful, and the writing was both funny and heartfelt. The plot isn’t strictly linear so while it takes some time to make full sense of when it comes together it hits. Its awesome seeing a queer story that’s neither a romance or look at oppression that still hits on a common experience in the community. I feel like a second viewing will be even better and will be putting that theory to the test very soon

  8. It was nice too find out that some child tales are common! I also very much liked the visuals of the show.
I didn’t catch anyone else’s struggle, except the main character’s. Sure, everyone had something, but that’s how every take is. Or did I miss the point of all of them?..
