Show Details

1990s Toronto: voice over work is a great way to find gigs. Two actors enter the same recording booth at two different times of day to dub a Japanese show about a group of magical girls fighting for hope and justice.

Content Notes

  • Mature language: for the swearing and references to sex.
  • Sexual content: for descriptions of intimate contact (breasts), references to characters’ personal sex lives. No on-stage nudity or intimate contact.
  • Mental health: there are references to characters dealing with queerphobia (homophobia explicitly, transphobia more implied) and misogyny. Some characters make flippant reference to suicide and self harm, but there is no on-stage self harm.

Unexpected changes to the script cause tension between them and their director. This kids’ show makes them feel seen in ways they didn’t expect, but that’s not allowed on cable.

  1. An absolutely incredible show! Exceptionally written and a passionate love letter to ’90’s anime. The acting is impeccable and honest and the play examines the complexity of queer censorship in media in a funny and poignant way. Well done!

  2. This show is great! I took a chance on it going to see it knowing very little and absolutely loved it. These first time Fringe producers did an incredible job with the writing and the performing. The story was compelling, funny and pointed at serious issues. The voice acting was just awesome. I highly recommend this show!

  3. Yes yes YES!!!!!!!! this show made me laugh and cry and FEEL man. As a theatre kid presenting undercover weeb, I appreciated the shows ability to sell the world of this fictional anime while remaining so grounded and based. Writing is hilarious as well. So impressed with this entire team and recommending this to everyone.

  4. I really enjoyed this one! I have no background in animé, but anyone who watched YTV in the 90s will be able to lock right into this universe.

  5. Incredible! If you grew up with dubbed anime you will love all the pitch perfect details woven into this play! Even if you didn’t the engaging framing and excellent voice work would be more than enough to recommend this show!

  6. This show, with a simple set, takes right into the world of 90s anime dubbing. Some really great and effective lighting choices.
The writing is fantastic. The dialogue is snappy.
    The performances are really authentic.
It is clear that Wheaton is incredibly knowledgeable about voice acting and anime and that passion shines through in this play.

I am definitely looking forward Wheaton next project.

  7. A really delightful show that left me wanting more. This show is a love letter to those who felt something queer awaken within them because of certain facets of 90s anime – and really, it will resonate with anyone who has had a queer awakening. Simply staged and well-executed, so I’d say that the actors carry the show were it not so well-written! In particular, everything to do with the show that the characters are recording (a show where pretty girls band together to fight evil) is genre-perfect, both in terms of writing and voice acting. I’ll be paying attention to this team in the future!
