A comedic puppet adventure from Velvet Wells, for young (and young at heart) audiences

Afi Ata’s favourite ice cream shoppe is under new management and has stopped selling Chocolate Caramel – her favourite ice cream flavour! She got banned for speaking out.

Last night she had a dream about being bigger and winning over the new owners with powerful words. Today, she’s going to make her dreams come true and have justice served!

Every show:

  • mask-mandatory for audiences
  • ASL-English interpretation
  • post-show audience talkback with the performer

Serious words about a silly show
Through metaphor, whimsy, and playfulness, this play explores how one young person encourages accountability (for a character exhibiting racist and trans misogynistic behaviour) to heal and strengthen the community

Take aways:

  • let children be part of the conversation
  • strength in numbers
  • community building comes from repairing/healing our community ties

Themes: being Black, being queer, coming of age, transformative justice, community building
Theatrical Style: Puppetry, Comedy, Musical, Whimsy

  1. What a fun, accessible show for all ages! The songs are an absolute bop. Velvet is an expert puppeteer. If you or your kid loves justice or ice cream, you absolutely must not miss this show!

A wonderful showcase of black joy!

  2. I scream you scream justice is a very family friendly show and understandable for all ages! It is a queer show and an audience participation show! There is singing in it that sounds very good, but, if you can’t hear there are subtitles and someone who translates what the actor (Velvet) says to ASL!

  3. What a fun puppet show that offers many accessibility initiatives from ASL interpretation to English subtitles. It has a deep message about community and justice. The team is lovely and talented.

  4. What a fantastic show! My daughter and I loved it! It touches on important themes like community, anti-racism, self-care, and fighting for what you believe in, but in a way that is highly accessible and enjoyable for kids. We laughed, we cheered and we sang along! Velvet had my 7 year-old’s full attention for the full 50 minutes – no easy feat! Well done!

  5. The layered storytelling is funny and entertaining to an audience of all ages, while presenting messages about anti-racism and community that were accessible to older kids (like my 7-year-old). I truly appreciated how the show sparked a family discussion about injustice and taking action (and also some great laughs!). I would love to see this presented in schools! Thank you!

  6. Cute, warm, funny with an incredible message about community, anti-racism and queer identity. Velvet is a consumate performer and their talent shines in this family friendly musical fun-fest.

  7. If you think this show is only for kids, think again. For sure, puppets help to convey a message to kids, but fighting racism and building communities will also resonate in adults hearts.
Do not miss an excellent performer who knows how to make puppets showing their feelings and their dreams.

  8. An adorable show with an important message. Velvet brings the fun with puppet dance sequences, original songs, and some voluntary audience participation. This grown-up had a blast!
