We had the pleasure of attending the opening night of Entangled, as it was the only performance we could fit into a busy schedule. We did realize that we were missing the final Raptors game – but this was worth it!
A simple and effective set, as the entire play is a passionate intellectual discussion between two giants. Paul Rainville and David Frisch were truly up to the task of delivering this challenging script. We certainly never felt these actors slip, and the discussion – SO well written – was fascinating! The truth and rigorous discipline of science set against the less scientific but equally important struggle to understand the human psyche. Each man a giant in his own sphere, yet troubled by and in need of the capabilities of the other. Pauli tormented by dreams (and alcoholism), while Jung is horribly daunted by the sheer magnitude of the intellect of the physicist, his own endeavours seemingly trite by comparison.
I loved the way the two types of intellect are placed side by side – how one man finds humans (women in particular) so hard to understand, while the other is stymied by equations. There is so much to explore here in this intersection of two seemingly different worlds!
Entangled is SO worth seeing! I am amazed at the depth of insight that the playwright has wrought from his study of two lives intertwined. Well done!
(We even managed to catch the last several minutes of the game!)
This show was an interesting and cerebral exploration of the relationship between Jung’s search for universal archetypes in the depths of the human psyche and Pauli’s search for a universal theory of the cosmos in the depths of sub-atomic particles. The actors were strong and convincing, and I left the theatre with plenty of food for thought.
An excellent excellent show. Go see this show. Serious script dealing with profound psychology and ideas, serious acting, with excellent portrayals of both Jung and Wolfgang Pauli. Very interesting conversation about dreams, early memories, and the relation between physics and depth psychology. This was the best show of the five I have yet seen at Fringe.
Two excellent performers, a passionate debate about atoms and archetypes, based on a real correspondence between Carl Jung and Wolfgang Pauli, make Entangled an intense encounter. Expectations are raised as David Frisch’s Pauli, on his deathbed, calls out to Paul Rainville’s Jung. The relationship between these two men of seemingly incompatible fields is unexpected and fascinating. Their sharp and combative discussion, in which much of the past comes to light, is invigorating territory to be sure. But, somewhere in the early stages of their confrontation, we become aware that they are recounting a shared past for our benefit. Enter exposition; that conundrum of all plays charged with the task of recounting a fascinating historical backstory. Like physics and the alchemy of dreams, plays too have inescapable maxims, such as ‘show, don’t tell’. And equations: character + motivation X the power of desire = conflict, which in turn creates a big bang of dramatic action. There is tremendous good work in all aspects of this production, from excellent performances by Frisch and Rainville to sensitive direction by Cathy Clark. But – perhaps – playwright Jacob Berkowitz, who clearly approaches his characters and their intertwined lives with knowledge and passion, will consider further drafts with less theory and more essence of theatre. A great play to see before, or after, “Pinter Stew” and “A Walk in the Snow”.
Physics has taken over Fringe and it’s wonderful. This is a really good play, provocative and cerebrally exciting…in the hands of two excellent actors. Don’t miss this one. Expect sell-outs soon.
A rich theatrical experience, with many layers and densely-entangled strands. As a psychotherapist, I loved seeing the portrayal of Jung’s character and the backstory involving Pauli. The play was beautifully set and performed. I saw it two days ago and it is still resonating within me.
Excellent writing. Well acted. Weaving energy, space and mass in a poetic and believable way.
I loved it, there was lots of interesting dialogue, exploring the nature of the universe, the mind, the meaning of life, go see it!
