ONLY THE LONELY
What passes for dissecting Hollywood cinema – the Tom Hanks “Cast Away” vehicle – might actually be about loneliness in a crowded planet.
With a chair, a glass of water, some yellow twine and a basketball, the loin-clothed Jake Simonds creates his own little world. Though unlike Hanks, his solitude is most likely self-inflicted, imaginary perhaps, and unsettlingly relatable. A sparse, introspective, solo shows is a tough task, but this one works. It’s a little rough and dark around the edges, but that actually adds to the ambience. Lots to think about here.
Oh and the rope is a clever prop: creating a shrinking border for the desert island. And at the show’s conclusion, Simonds is at the end of it.
I’m shocked there aren’t more glowing reviews for such an apropos social commentary on loneliness and isolation… this one-man show beautifully touches on so many shared experiences in life that cause feelings of loneliness and separation. Very creative dialogue includes some monologues that will leave your brain on overdrive long after the show, and an ongoing list of instances we can all relate to (sometimes a little too well) wherein we’re made to feel outcast, isolated, and alone are all punctuated by what seemed to be ‘just a dance’…
How ironic that, in relating to all of these situations of solitude, we’re actually able to feel less alone?
If you haven’t seen this yet, you need to… even if it’s a ticket for one.
(Sidenote: Jake – saw you taking in another performance sitting in the back by yourself and it was everything we could do to not wanna come over and join you… bravo on a truly, truly beautiful show. Thank you so much for sharing this with us!!!)
Premium solo fringe performance with terrific physicality, interesting commentary and great use of props, all packed into a sparse but evocative setting and with fun references to recent cinema history.
The type of Fringe that makes you want to come back for more.
