Twenty years ago, a volunteer group of Ottawa producers founded a festival where independent artists could perform original theatre—and maybe break even.

So far, it’s been a huge success. By returning 100% of ticket sales to the performers, we have put more than $1.62 million into the pockets of independent artists.

The Festival’s success is an act of will, a choice made by a great many people that tells us something about the culture we’re creating in Ottawa today. Fringe exists because a community of people chooses to support independent art year in and year out… and you have been a member of that community.

The cost to produce the Ottawa Fringe Festival is significant, but it’s widely shared. We ask the Festival’s patrons to buy a $3 Fringe Pin – that’s much less than the real cost. Many also donate to the Ottawa Fringe, which pays venues, seasonal staff, technicians, designers, and interns, and that supports the Festival in many other ways.

Our team manages a venue 365 days a year, produces a winter festival, supports new work with creation grants, and partners with local start-ups such as Fresh Meat: DIY Theatre Festival, Youth Infringement, and the TACTIC Series to name a few.

The Ottawa Fringe Festival (registered charity no. 897771721RR0001) needs your help to keep growing strong.

In return, you’ll have our thanks and the knowledge that every day we – and many others associated with the global Fringe movement – will be fighting for something special, which you helped to create and maintain.

In any number of ways:

  • Tip the Fringe! This one’s easy. When buying Fringe tickets online, there’s an option to top-up your purchase with a gift. Donations greater than $10 receive a tax receipt in the mail.
  • Make a one-off or monthly donation. This can be done any time of the year. Just scroll to the bottom of this page and hit the “Donate Now” arrow! Tax receipts are issued immediately online, for any amount.
  • Make yourself a Showbiz Executive. Cover the basic costs of a performance (such as the technician’s wage), a weekend run, or the rental of an entire venue. Gain fame and a puffy chest knowing how your support helps the Festival. And we’ll get you your new business card. Seriously. Interested? The Ottawa Fringe Thanks You.

The Ottawa Fringe Festival is a charitable non-profit with a mandate to provide a stage for the performing arts that is as accessible to artists as it is for audiences. We rely on grants, members and donors to support this endeavour. A festival with no curator and where 100% of ticket sales go directly to the artists. We are deeply grateful to the following individuals for their contributions.

Our super kind in-kind donors! These special folks have made very useful donations. All sorts of stuff, such as bar fridges, raffle prizes, creative services, catering a meal for volunteers… You’d think love and money is enough to run the Ottawa Fringe Festival but sometimes we just need STUFF. More of these donors have been so kind as to billet a touring artist.
